Spring is Sandblasting & Coating Season

Wabbit season! Duck season! While Bugs and Daffy argued to save their skins, facility maintenance engineers and managers know that it’s really repair season. Time for sandblasting and coating those exterior elements of the physical plant that sustain damage, such as tanks, hoppers, walls, and containments.

Maple Grove Enterprises’ turnkey on-site and in-house sandblasting, coating, and metal fabrication services put any facility in top form—safely, within budget, and on time.

water absorber tankHere’s one project that highlights the scope of our work, both on-site and in-house. A power plant in New York hired us to repair two of their concrete absorber water tanks. The concrete was cracked, the coal tar epoxy coating was failing in key spots, and the carbon steel baffles inside the tanks were rusted and detaching from the wall.

First, we went on site to remove the old baffles. After torching them out, our crew sandblasted the entire interior of the tank (each one 30 feet in diameter and 30 feet high) to remove the existing coal tar coating. We then repaired the concrete with epoxy mortar. Back in our shop, we fabricated new carbon steel baffles.

We then coated both the baffles and the interior tank walls with Devtar 5A-HS Epoxy High Build Coating from Devoe High Performance Coatings. This product resists splash and spillage of alkalis, dilute acids, sewage, salt brine, liquid fertilizers, and crude oil. Devtar exceeds the performance of coal tar epoxies and its low-VOC formula makes it safer for the environment.

tankAfter coating the tank, we installed the baffles and bolted them to the tanks with stainless steel anchor bolts. As you can see from the photos, the interior surface is flawless and the brand new baffles will hold up for years.
