Are Your Railings in Compliance?
It's easy to overlook the lowly handrail
in your factory or plant. Many railings were installed as
an afterthought, without consideration given to the proper height
and placement required for optimal safety. Some may have been
installed correctly, but are now rusty or falling apart.
|
But according to OSHA 1910.23(e)(1):
"A standard railing shall consist of
top rail, intermediate rail, and posts, and shall have a
vertical height of 42 inches nominal from upper surface
of top rail to floor, platform, runway, or ramp level. The
top rail shall be smooth-surfaced throughout the length
of the railing. The intermediate rail shall be approximately
halfway between the top rail and the floor, platform, runway,
or ramp. The ends of the rails shall not overhang the terminal
posts except where such overhang does not constitute a projection
hazard."
In some cases, railings may never have
been installed at all. But again, according to OSHA 1910.24(h): "Standard
railings shall be provided on the open sides of all exposed
stairways and stair platforms. Handrails shall be provided
on at least one side of closed stairways preferably on the
right side descending. Stair railings and handrails shall
be installed in accordance with the provisions of 1910.23."

Our trained professionals
at Maple Grove Enterprises
can provide you with a free estimate
for fabricating custom handrails that fit your needs and meet
OSHA guidelines.
Unlike factory-ordered handrails
or other fabrication companies, Maple Grove Enterprises will see
the job through from start to finish. We will measure, estimate, fabricate,
coat and install! We can repair your existing railings, or fabricate
new ones from steel, stainless steel, or aluminum (if weight is
an issue). We can sandblast off old coatings or rust, prime the
railings with epoxy, and then apply a urethane top coat that is
long lasting and durable. Finally, we will install the repaired
or new handrailings into concrete or steel.
