Insulating a Rotary Kiln
When a ready-mix concrete company in upstate New York needed to reduce their natural gas energy costs, they hired Maple Grove Enterprises to insulate their rotary kiln. Using environmentally friendly and highly efficient products such as Aspen Aerogel's Pyrogel© XT and Envirotrol's Ceramic Cover CC, the company will realize enough energy savings in one year to pay for the job. The carbon steel rotary kiln was uninsulated, inefficient, and corroded. Surface temperatures commonly exceeded 500ºF. . |
We wrapped the kiln with just 10mm of Aspen Aerogel's Pyrogel© XT, an environmentally friendly product that alone will reduce the heat loss from more than 3 million Btu / hr to just about 27 thousand Btu / hr! |

After securing the Pyrogel© with stainless steel banding, we coated the kiln with 40 mils of Envirotrol's Ceramic Cover CC. This will further reduce the heat loss, to about 23,000 Btu / hr. |
We then wrapped the kiln with embossed aluminum. The surface temperature of the rotary kiln will now be reduced to less than 200ºF. |
